Underrated and Underpaid

Source: http://quotesaboutfriendship.info/?page=/overworked-teacher-quotes/

I remember one of my teachers telling me in 9th grade that his starting pay was $16,000 per year. “At that time, I didn’t have these reserves”, he said tapping his rounded belly and laughing about it. Thinking back about it, I can only imagine the struggles he and his wife went through trying to provide for their family.

I had another teacher that same year who was just starting off. It was her first year at our school, and she was full of spirit and energy. Over the course of the year, she became less animated and her smile seemed more forced. That’s hard to avoid when working a side job as a waitress trying to make ends meet, but still starting school promptly at 8 am. Needless to say, she didn’t have any “reserves”…

  1. This is a topic that I really care about and is very important to me. In my opinion, teachers have one of the hardest and most important jobs, because they are essentially teaching the future of our country. This immense power that they have in teaching these children should not be underappreciated and underpaid in any way at all. This career should be one that is high in the professional hierarchy and should have much social respect overall for the contributions teachers make to society though the impact they make on their students.
